[OT] General Purpose Storage Discussion

This list is great -- but obviously is NetApp centric. I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a mailing list or forum, with a similar level of participation and expertise, that's a bit more "general purpose" but still storage-centric. Something similar to the SAGE/LISA mailing lists for Systems Administration. Perhaps SNIA offers such discussion groups to its members? Thanks, Ray

Running on non-redundant power

Guys, We're in the process of starting to migrate from some 3140s running 7.3.6 to a 3220 cluster running 8.1.2, or whatever the latest release is. Going from 3.5 racks down to just 1 rack, woohoo! But I'm short of 30amp power plugs in my data center. So my plan is to drop one of my 3140s down to just two 30A circuits so I can bring up the 3220 cluster with fully redundant power. I know I need to turn off autosupport while this is happening, though I'd like to just turn off warning about power problems and keep auto support going for disk failures. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks, John

Ready-only folder troubles with MAC OSX Clients on a NetApp CIFS Share

Hey there, I'm having a strange problem with a freshly deployed FAS2240 (8.1.2P3). Some OSX Clients (iMacs, Macbooks, etc.) are having troubles to write files to the CIFS shares on that filer. The share itself looks like this: VOLUME /vol/CIFS_SHARES/VOLUME ... access based enum supported ... client side caching disabled NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users / Full Control > qtree status Volume Tree Style Oplocks Status -------- -------- ----- -------- --------- CIFS_SHARES ntfs enabled normal CIFS_SHARES VOLUME ntfs enabled normal File permissions on the root of the share look like that: [cid:image001.png@01CE45E7.10730B60] Except for the "Authenticated Users" entry, all other groups do have "Full Control" Permissions on that share (at the root of the share). At the root level of this share, there are several folders which do have permission inheritance disabled, i.e.: \\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentA<file:///\\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentA> \\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentB<file:///\\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentB> ... On each of these subfolders, the permissions look like that: [cid:image002.png@01CE45E7.CDEE9510] So the SYSTEM group as well as some custom active directory groups do have Full Control on this folder and all of its subfolders. The users in question are part of one of these groups (in that specific case, part of the group "Creative Services") and can map the share and see it (which they cannot for other shares where they are not member of the respecitve groups, so ABE is working as it should). Anyhow, no matter what I do, at all of these DepartmentX folders, I do see the read-only item grey-checked and cannot remove that, no matter what I do: [cid:image003.png@01CE45E7.CDEE9510] That does not seem to be a problem at all for all the Microsoft Windows clients, they can work and store files without issues - but the OSX clients seem to have problems for whatever reason. The error message they are getting when trying to store a file in one of the folders there is (translated, the client is running in local language here): Adobe Photoshop Couldn't save file "xyz.psd" because no write access has been granted. I'm thankful for any ideas you guys might have - maybe I'm missing just a small thing here in my setup. cf_config_check gone?

Does anyone know what happened to the cf_config_check tool on now.netapp.com? It's referenced in a bunch of places, but it's not there any more. I've spinning up a new 3220 cluster running 8.1.2 (anything I need to watch out for?) and I'd like to make sure I've got a good setup. Thanks, John

Protection Manager: Ignore unprotected Volumes/Qtrees

Hello All, I would like to use DFM (OnCommand Core) to track any unprotected Volumes/Qtrees in my NetApp environment. The menu 'Unprotected Data --> Resources' in Protection Manager shows me a list with all unprotected Qtrees but unfortunately, I do not know how to customize this list. I would like to ignore a) Volumes that we do not save at all and b) all non-qtree data, because we always use Qtrees. Is there a way to customize the list in Protection Manager or does somebody know a completely different solution, that could meet my needs? Thanks in advance. Regards, Pascal

All, does anyone know exactly how autosupport goes about to extract the extra "secret" info from 'environment status'? In ONTAP 8.1, the body.7z archive file included in the autosupport e-mails, has a file ENVIRONMENT.txt in it and looking inside it one can see this kind of stuff: $ egrep -i charg tmp/ENVIRONMENT.txt NV charging_status normal 4096 NV charging_voltage normal 8100 mV NV charging_current normal 0 mA NV absolute_charge normal 70 % NV relative_charge normal 81 % Battery Charge Failed? Cannot delete directories in mixed mode qtree

One of our home directory directories was inadvertently set to mixed mode and now I'm having problems deleting sub-dirs from it. Many of the directories appear to be empty both on the NFS and CIFS side yet ls shows them containing more than 4k but even the ones that are 4k do not let me delete them. It's not every directory (I've been able to delete ~500) but the ones remaining I cannot get rid of either as root on the NFS side or with Domain Admin rights. One last interesting thing is that if I try to force change the rights it says the path is \\host\UserDirectorynane (missing the \ before Directoryname) in the Windows UI. Kind of scary, I've never seen this before. I would not be terribly surprised if there was not some file system corruption here, there where a LOT of files in this directory and it's children at one point. Hi Folks, How do I trigger snmp trapp to test SNMP setup? Is there anything similar to "telnet" command to test if firewall is open? There used to be another utility "tcp_client" that could work, but now it is gone as well

slow giveback protocol transit time

I realise that giveback times depend on various factors including configuration and load. Generally our giveback protocol transit times have been at most 30 seconds. We recently gave back one Filer with neither controller under load and no obvious configuration changes and the protocol transit time for CIFS and NFS was approximately 70 seconds.
