Quick question about "LUN protocol type"

In the FilerView LUN wizard, I see the following options for "LUN protocol type": Solaris Windows - "The LUN will be used to store a raw disk device in a single-partition Windows disk" HP-UX AIX Linux - "The LUN will be used to store a Linux raw disk with no partition table" NetWare VMware The "na_snap" manpage also lists the types "windows_gpt" and "vld". If we're making a LUN with a DOS partition table and one partiton that will be used by a Linux host, should we use the "Windows" or "Linux" setting? Or does it matter? -- David L. Lambert Yahoo! All good points. That said, when I said 'write tool' and 'cifs top' I was thinking more interactive on the CLI of the actual filer to spot check stuff. I could have all of the talent in the world and not be able to produce this without getting it checked into the ONTAP code ;) Perhaps I will un-lazy myself when I get free time and give a client script version of this a whirl. do toaster need a day off? (WAFL scans)

Two scenarios: 1. R200, 7.2.2, two 12 TB aggregates, 85 volumes of various sizes, 70-80% full snapvault secondary, ALWAYS receiving snapvaults and nearly ALWAYS spinning to tape. 2. 6070, 7.2.4, two 8 TB aggregates, 27 volumes between 150 and 700 GB, 60-70% full recent migration (via volume snapmirrors) from 980's, serves home directories to NFS and CIFS clients. We stopped all snapmirrors/snapvaults to the R200, terminated CIFS, and shut off NFS. CPU utilization remained 90%+ and disk reads remained high for the next 6-7-8 hours until it finally quieted down. After volume snapmirroring the home dirs from the 980's to the 6070, we re-pointed the snapvaults (modify; start -r) and allowed NFS and CIFS access. 5 days later, file server performance still blows (worse than the 980's -- D'oh! Egg, meet Face; Face, meet Egg), with moderate CPU load 30-40-50% but high disk reads. In both cases, we determined that lots of WAFL scans were going on: container block reclamation volume deswizzling active bitmap rearrangement (of course...this NEVER seems to stop) and a few other types that have already scrolled out of my buffer. So, we figure--eventually--the WAFL scans will catch up and performance will go back to normal on the 6070. The performance of the R200 always blows. So...here finally is the question: do toasters need a day off? Said another way, to maintain acceptable performance and low/fast response times, do toasters need a goodly amount of (relatively) idle time in order for these WAFL scans to complete? Could the sub-optimal performance of another group of six 6070's that we have, that we *pound on* 7x24, be explained in part by always having at least the container block reclamation scan going on? Snapvault hangs after tranfering a gig of data?

Snapvaults schedules not at the top of the hour

What would be the best way to get snapvault to move a snapshot from the primary that's not created on an hour boundary? We're putting our DB into hot backup mode at 9:05 and I don't want to make the DBA change his scripts if possible, is there a way (maybe with rsh+cron) that I can manually create a snapshot at 9:15 and then use snapvault to transfer it? 7.3x on 800's

Has anyone attempted to put OnTap 7.3 on an 800 series filer? Can you do it? Is it simply that NetApp doesn¹t support it, or will it not run at all? Thanks, --Carl

oracle coruption caused by NFS file system is full

Our firm runs oracle 9i using NFS file system from Netapp(3040 running 7.2), we have noticed few cases now that when the NFS file system is full, oracle database crash and can not even start after that. It turns out that database has logical corruption, does anybody experience similar issues? Thanks

Thanks everybody's input, I have get a lot of replies, the best thing to do is obvious not get volume full. In our scenario, these are test/development databases, all the oracle files are on single NFS volume , database is not Running in archive mode, The argument so far is : Is corruption a normal behavior after oracle file system is full or it should never? Could this be anything particular related to NFS since we had never observed this on SAN? From my understanding and experience (we got hit once at CERN when we started using DOT devices/NFS for Oracle databases, then we understood the issue and took the right actions to prevent this from happening again), the issue can typically be linked with snapshots: one (or more) snapshots having been created on the volume, Oracle needs to update a block, which turns to the need of more space as the old copy has to be kept (to preserve the snapshot). If no space is available, the write operation is refused which Oracle sees as a "corruption". It is quite well described in TR-3633, pages 22-24. http://media.netapp.com/documents/tr-3633.pdf The operations to be performed (after having added space) to recover from this situation depends on the type of the affected file, the cases are listed as well in the mentioned document. It may actually not be linked with auto-extensibility of Oracle datafiles (which we use extensively without problem). Just updating redo-log files and/or changing blocks in datafiles can generate the issue. Unix <=> NTFS permissions question

Hello Toaster Experts! We are currently mounting an NFS directory, e.g. /home/production from a filer to a Solaris 10 box. Security is done by local passwd entries. We need to export this directory via CIFS with read and write access to a group of windows developers ( a group in Active Directory.) Is there a way to do this without converting the filer security from UNIX to NTFS? The shares is owned by a single unix UID but will be accessed by multiple AD users. Is there a way to translate AD groups into Unix groups since usermap.cfg seems to translate only user IDs. We don't want to run mixed-mode security. Thanks a lot. Oskar

You can't map groups, but if you can ensure that every Windows user belongs to a group that can read/write the files. Each CIFS user will map to a UNIX user with UNIX groups. If, by some chance the controller can't map to a UNIX user, you can set the option cifs.default_unix_user to the UNIX user who owns the files.
