Simple Snapshot question.

I have a volume from an R200 mounted over NFS. I copy file foo from the client onto the filer. I then create a snapshot. I delete foo and recreate foo, which has the same or slightly modified content (but different metadata). I now copy foo onto the filer. How much space have I just consumed on my R200? foo plus changes or 2xfoo? Thanks, Alex.

That's one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it is this: don't be bleeding edge, but don't run the oldest stuff you can find either. 6.5 isn't antiquated and I wouldn't suggest not using this (except for all of those nasty NFS bugs in 6.5.2). At the same time, 7.0 has been out for quite some time and is starting to get pretty solid. What I should have said was: always go with the latest available release that has proven itself to be stable\reliable. 7.0.3 has bugs... but how many does 6.5.6 have? Part of the issues that we all face is the fact that some bugs are NEVER fixed in the current release tree... there are some that we require a fix for, but it will only be fixed in 7.1... NetApp is going to start changing how much they will back-port, even in a D release model. Yes, but all of the NAS vendors have some sort of block storage (or SAN) on the back end. NetApps uses Fibre Channel arbitrated loop "SAN's" for the block access that their file system needs to access storage. So I don't ever think of this whole SAN versus NAS thing as relevant. You always have both file and block access needs. Hey there Does anyone know where I can get some Visio stencils that represent the various NetApp boxes? I want to diagram our NAS/SAN setup in our colo. Also, does anyone know where I can get some good Visio stencils that represent logical volumes and such? Thanks KEN

He's right, the traditional volumes will not be able to be upgraded. You have to have the room to migrate your storage over. We used a SnapMirror to new discs to accomplish our migration. That's the only small drawback to the 7.x flex vols. Everything else about them is golden. We have used NetApp for many years and use them in many creative ways, but the flex vols have opened up new worlds to us. You will want to check with your rep and make sure you are running the proper release. 7.x comes in a few flavors, some may be better for one part of your environment and some for others. You may not be able to run a seamless transfer from trad to flexvol using just NetAPP; however, if you are using complimentary software such as VFM or even hardware such as Acopia you can do it.
