maxing out the filesystem

This is my first time posting I just inherited 2 older filers. 840 and 960 models Unfortunately they didnt come with nearly enough disk space for our needs. I know I cant fill the volumes to 100% and expect them to work but how high can I fill the volumes and expect it to work and performance not to suffer. Can I go to 95% if I turn off snapshots? Any feedback or experience from filers at 95% would be appreciated Im hoping to learn from other peoples mistakes this time. Of course theres always the option of buying more disk but for now I need to see what I can do with what we've been given without spending more money. Getting LDAP to work

Hi there I am trying to get my F810 Filer (Data Ontap 7.1) to authenticate users against an LDAP directory. I read this http://<filername>/na_admin/doc/html/ontap/filesag/7multi21.htm and changed the options mentioned, namely: ldap.base ldap.base.group ldap.base.passwd ldap.enable ldap.port ldap.servers ldap.usermap.enable I also set the CIFS authentication method to 4. My problem is that the Filer isn't very informative about what's going on. When adding a Filer to a Windows 2000 domain I get all sorts of status messages while adding it to the domain and afterwards I can run cifs domaininfo and cifs lookup to test the access to the domain and it works fine. But when trying this LDAP out the filer just logs nothing..when trying to add a UID from our LDAP directory to a share it just adds the UID that I type without validating it anywhere (or so it seems) My question: Is there a command or a way to get some sort of LDAP related status messages out? Even if it was just a "bind succesful" message or "authentication failed" it would help me a lot. Bonus question: What syntax should I use when adding a user to a share using an LDAP directory? When using a domain I just type domain\username but what exactly do I need to type when my authentication method is LDAP? The LDAP directory I connect to is not an Active Directory. NetApp to non-NetApp replication

Hello, I need to replicate data between a FAS250 and non-NetApp storage - I can't warrant another Filer at the moment, so SnapMirror is out sadly. The amount of data will be just under 1TB and will contain Maildirs, so the level of change will be quite high for about 300GB of that. The rest will be fairly static. The connection used for replication will be 100Mbit/sec. I'd like to find a method that can get me as close to immediate replication as possible, however a lag of about 3 hours is probably acceptable for most of the content. I've been looking at the file server extension to NDMPv4 and various third-party software, as well as things like rsync, but wondered if anyone else had any ideas of things I should be looking at? Philip, a wafl scan reallocate is just a defragmentation. Did NetApp ask you to run a wafl scan measure_layout? What was the result? BTW, I do not remember any improvement with reallocate in ONTAP 6.x It moves blocks around and comes back with pretty much the same fragmentation as it was before. It really works in 7.x However, to rule out fragmentation you need the measure_layout value. I've updated the threshold so that the mirroring runs a little more frequent and this appears to have reduced the high cpu issue. Note, I'm only running approximately 4 snap mirror threads on a clustered environment so I'm not hitting any mirroring thread limitations. This increase in cpu is unexpected as the filer is running around 50% less snapmirror threads and 40% less volumes from 6 months ago. so if anything I should see a drop in cpu activity. Support are advising me to run a 'wafl scan reallocate' as one volume is close to 80% full. I'm not convinced and reluctant to kick off wafl commands. Yes another maildir question

Hi, I have followed on the Courier maildir discussion's. We are considering moving our mailstore to a FAS230, out mail system is Postfix and Cyrus. Both mail server (HP DL380) and the Netapp have dual NIC's and the switch an HP procurve 2824, so our options are: 1. Trunks on both side, using NFS. 2. VLAN's using a separated subnet for NFS with jumbo blocks, NFS locks will not be an issue, as only one mail server is accessing the mailstore. 3. VLAN's using a separated subnet for iSCSI with jumbo blocks While number 3 seems the most logical, I am not familiar with iSCSI, especially on Debian. I am also not sure how well this will scale if I have other systems using the iSCSI VLAN (for MS-SQL and other application. Any comments or references will be most welcome. Thanks Gil

Unallocating the blocks would be just an update to the spacemap metadata and would be very quick. The zero process takes a considerable amount of time and constitutes lots of disk reads\writes (LEDs are very busy). RE: How to mount a snapmirror lun w/o snapdrive

I've not used this functionality without snapdrive, but there is always a cmd way :-) SnapDrive just automates things. In this case, it checks the metadata of the volume on the SM destination and senses that it is indeed a SnapMirror'ed volume. Then it breaks the SM relationship to make it writeable and subsequently restores the LUN in question that you want to connect to. Be warned - the SFSR functionality can take some significant time... however, SnapDrive 4.0\ONTAP 7.1 significantly reduces this operation by performing the block compare\filesystem writes behind the scenes while the LUN is 'restored' via LUN clone\LUN split (instead of the old SingleFileSnapRestore). In your case, however... you'd have to trust that the LUN you wish to connect to is consistent - snapdrive does do by using the last consistent snapshot that it took (typically the '@snapmir@' one, if I recall). The difference between lun.rws and lun.lun is this: lun.lun is indeed your LUN. Lun.rws is the 'temp space' allocated\associated with a read\write LUN based off of a snapshot... there is no such thing (*ahem* yet) as a read-only LUN in ONTAP. The .rws is just a placeholder for any changes that you may make to the snapshot-version of the LUN you mount to. Be warned: creating a .rws file (done automatically via SnapDrive when you connect to the LUN in a snapshot) will LOCK the snapshot you created it from!! This is done to ensure that the mounted\active .rws LUN can point to the data blocks needed to represent its contents (if you deleted the snapshot, then you'd point to null data - not good). Any subsequent snapshot taken _after_ mounting the .rws file will also lock the previous snapshot. Be careful here! Does anyone here run the Oracle 11i Application suite (ERP) on a NetApp, via iSCSI or otherwise? We're considering a 3020 as part of our big Oracle hardware replacement project, and wanted to talk to some folks who have actually done it. The concern from the DBA folks is how a RAID4/6 system (with WAFL) can possibly compete with a RAID0/1 system... thanks! johnS

Hi, I have a lun that resides in a qtree and I am using volume level snapmirroring to another filer. My primary filer has snapdrive for connecting and creating luns. My secondary filer does not have snapdrive. I want to mount my snapmirrored luns to another host. I understand there is a command line way of doing this. (lun -f). Has anyone done it? Also what is the difference between a lun.rws filer and a lun.lun file? Thanks, SM

R100 ggregate size limited to 8 TByte?

Hello fellow toasters, I plan to migrate my R100 (84 136 Gbyte disks) (yes I should upgrade to newer systems ;-), to flexible volumes, ideally I would create a single aggregate (12+12+12+12+12+11+11 disks leaving 2 HotSpares). Someone mentioned that this would not be possible, and that the R100 has a limit of 8 Tbyte for the aggregate size, thus I had to create two aggregates? Is this true? could not find any hint on the NOW site yet ... Cheers --pwo

got today messages on my netapp 3020c: [filer: nfsd.assist.queue.exceeding.limit:warning] <javascript:popEMS('nfsd.assist.queue.exceeding.limit');>: There are 132 items on the NFS assist queue, which exceeds the cutoff limit of 130. found nothing in my handbooks, and syslog-translator does not know what this would be. at the same time we had some severe performance-problems, but we dont know yet, if these were triggered by that message. is there something i could do? yours josef radinger it-services medical university innsbruck
