(The simulator runs all of ONTAP as a process under Linux. At a very low level, we spoof the disk drivers, so that disks are simulated by local files. We spoof the network drivers by putting the Linux Ethernet card into promiscuous mode and creating a fake MAC address associated with the simulator.) Enough technical details. The point of this message is that we are now making the simulator available to customers so that they can experiment with ONTAP features and commands without putting production systems at risk. I have had many customers tell me that they wished they had a way to play with new releases and new features, but they didn't have a safe place to do it. Just to be clear: This is not production software. It's ONTAP running on top of Linux, so don't use it for performance testing. We have no formal support program. Don't call NetApp support. This is an "as is" tool. (Some restrictions may apply. :-) On the other hand, I think you will find the simulator to be very useful for experimenting with ONTAP. Hundreds of NetApp engineers use it every day, and we have been using the simulator for over a year in NetApp training classes. Not only can you experiment with the features of a single filer, but you can run multiple simulators and experiment with features like SnapMirror, SnapVault, and Cluster Fail Over. It doesn't support Fibre Channel, because that would take more hardware, but it does support iSCSI and all of the other TCP/IP protocols, including NFS, CIFS, HTTP and FTP, as well as network management protocols like SNMP and NDMP. Here are some details: You can download the simulator from NOW at <http://now.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/simulator>. We have created a category in the NOW community forums called "ONTAP Simulator" that can be accessed at <http://forums.netapp.com/showcategory.asp?cid=172>. And finally, we have created a majordomo mailing list that people can join at xdl-simulator(a)netapp.com. (You know the drill. To join send to majordomo(a)netapp.com, not to the simulator list itself.) And of course, feel free to talk about it here on toasters. The error was found to occur only in our "specific" circumstance. So what was/is our circumstance? 1) F880 source snapmirroring 3 batch area volumes to an F820 target across a 20Mbit Ethernet WAN. 2) The amount of data change per day is high. Approximately 10-40Gb per volume. 3) We were experiencing poor throughput across the WAN link (carrier issue) and had to frequently abort the snapmirror and delete snapshots from the F880 source in order to prevent snapshot space over-running production data space. This throughput has since been addressed (before D8). 4) The F820 target panicked a couple of times and dumped to the ok prompt. One of the target volumes was found to be corrupt. It was difficult to say if the source filer caused it or the target filer developed the corruption independently. We had some cases open and ran wafl checks and scans on both filers as a result. No errors were turned up. 5) The crash dump file was ftp'd to NetApp. This lead to the 6.3.1D8 debug release. When I get some more time, I might read into it a bit further. For now, I am more than happy that they have addressed the issue and fixed it very quickly. We have not had any problems with 6.3.1 or the D8 releases. command to tell you what kind of shelves you have

Is there a command that will output what type of shelves are attached to a netapp. The closes I was able to come was "environment status shelf" but that doesn't tell me whether they are FC7, FC8 or FC9 shelves. Thanks Dan

BEA Weblogics

Are there any users out there using BEA Weblogics App servers out there that may be mounting the "projects" area from filers? BEA moves files around from the Admin Server to Managed Servers which may be on separate machines via its "deploy command. I'm vying to mount the domain dir on the Admin host and also make that a share to the W2K "build box". When our build guy goes to deploy apps his Ant scripts need to simply copy the .ear's and .war's to a "drop dir" which is also on the Admin host. From there we do the Weblogics "deploy" which does a number of things fundamentally which is moving the .ear files out of the drop dir and into the deploy app dirs. Anybody doing this? Thanks -Rob

Disk Hardware Questions

Some questions. . . 1. I have a DS14 shelf with 36gb disks, and FC8 shelf's with 18gb disks. Each shelf has a HotSpare. If a 18gb disk fails will it for sure use the 18gb hotspare or is there a chance it will pickup the 36gb hotspare? 2. I'm thinking about migrating all the data on the 36gb drives (including /etc folder) to fewer 72gb drives. What's the best way to do that? Can I add the new 72gb disks to the volume with 36gb drives, then start to remove 36gb drives over time? 3. Right now I have the FC connection going like this: Filer Head --> FC8 shelf --> FC8 shelf --> DS14 shelf. All of the important data is on the DS14 shelf. The FC8 shelfs aren't on support contracts, and don't have any important data at all. (mostly system images, software install files, etc). Is this a bad idea. How much risk am I putting my important data on the DS14 shelf. We're thinking about getting another FC HBA with two ports because right now we just have a single FC cable. Then I would plan on putting DS14 shelf on the Dual Port HBA (with redundant paths) and putting the FC8 shelfs on our current HBA by itself. 4. With the sysstats tool, what kind of numbers can I expect to max out on, on the Disk KB/s? Thanks, Steve Evans SDSU Foundation

Not until I did some experiments ... :) The "Cycle detected" message is apparently (from "strings" output) new in Solaris 9 "du". It seems that it happens whenever one applies "du" to a directory tree in which there are "visible" .snapshot directory entries (i.e. one or more NFS mount points). Presumably it's getting upset by the duplicate inode numbers appearing in snapshots. Lots of Unix utilities (especially GNUish ones) have had similar problems in the past.
