migration to new switch: questions

All the equipment in the server room has to be moved from a Cajun P550 switch to an Alpine 3808 Extreme switch, including our filers: an F760 with 9 Ethernet ports, an F740 with 4 ports, and an F230 with one port. - Is it necessary to bring down the filers before changing out the cables, or is it possible to get away with leaving them up and just unplugging the old cables and plugging in the new ones? - With the F760, eight of the ports are on two boards, and the ninth is a separate port labeled 10/100 BASE-T. If the system can remain up during the migration, does it matter what order the ports are moved? Also, if anyone has experience with this sort of migration, I'd appreciate any warnings, suggestions, or sadder-but-wiser advice (i.e., things you wish you'd known before you migrated your equipment) you can offer. We've already been warned to turn autonegotiation off and nail up the speed and duplex state on the Extreme. FC-AL on a 540

We're looking at replacing some (most) of the SCSI drives and shelves on our F540 with a FC-AL shelf. Looking through NOW I find hints that the F500 series supports FCAL, but going to the Configuration comparison I see that the F540 doesn't support FC-AL but that the F520 does. This I find to be very strange. Is there a reason for this? Does the F540 support FCAL? <scw> ----- Stephen C. Netapp equipment

Hi To All Just to let you all have a chance, I have the responsibility to remove quantities of older Netapp equipment, such as; F230's F630's F540, also scsi shelves differential and single ended with 9gb drives and I even have the older shelves that hold the 4gb drives. I also have other equipment but not Netapp. This inventory is at give away prices and some I will just give away and that's probably what I will do, donate to our Ottawa Universities and Colleges. XP refreshing

Hello Toasters, I have an F740c running 6.1.2R1 in NT4 domain. Currently, the client PC are being migrated to XP into W2K AD (mixed mode). Came across a peculiar problem and wondering if anyone else experience it. XP client with Windows Explorer open is continually refreshing when open against a Filer volume, share folder. Analysis has shown that it seems to be every two seconds a refresh occurs, and when using a network trace tool, it seems to average out at around 50K per second. As soon as explorer's focus is placed elsewhere, or shut down, this network load stops. This 'refreshing' only appears if the share folder is highly utilize. Connecting to a share folder that is no busy, the 'refreshing' does not exist. Notice this with W2K Pro client as well, but not as frequent as XP Client. thanks, Marcus Bui

Hi, yes, your statit figures look normal for that kind of configuration. That's the way WAFL works, it writes across the entire volume, equal amonts of data to each disk. If you mix drivesizes in a volume you will get this kind of behaviour, the smaller disks get filled first so writes go only to the bigger disks. 740 cluster OS question

We have a 740 cluster which we will be redeploying to production. The current GA release for this model is 6.22, however we were considering using 6.3.1 because this is the version we are running on our other filers. I called Netapp support and this are the recommendations. It did fix the problem. Thanks for all the input. 1. Remove the machine account for the Filer from the WindowsNT domain controller. 2. On the Filer, type: filer> cifs terminate 3. Issue these commands: filer> mv /etc/lclgroups.cfg /etc/lclgroups.old filer> mv /etc/filersid.cfg /etc/filersid.old filer> mv /etc/cifsconfig.cfg /etc/cifsconfig.old 4. Run cifs setup, and enter your apropriate information 5. Verify that you can join the WinNT domain, and that your users can now access and map the shares (if they cannot, please let me know, and please tell me what error messages you get) 6. LDAP auth ?

Hi Advice to netapp folks Monthes ago I asked if Ontap will support native LDAP (openldap) authentication ... I know active directory is supported BUT we do not want use M$ stuff here, we have a fully functionnal LDAP server running under UNIX ( Linux/Debian) and are satisfied with it. I repost my request as I have for now a brand new F87 that is not in production for now ( it will be in few weeks ) This machine would be a test platform if there is some beta ontap release that it supposed to support this kind of LDAP authentication. Extra filer heads not only make great swap/failover boxes, but excellent on-site spares kits and test beds as well. As such, many of our customers are dropping NetApp's expensive hardware support on their F700's.........when they suffer a hardware failure, they can swap the failing part immediately; we then ship a replacement part that goes back into their failover filer/spares kit. What if we have a failure in one of the heads of our F760s? We have a spare F740 head, would we be able to just put that in place? Is the raid information stored on the disk or on firmware in the head? I'm mostly wondering what would happen to the data in this situation. Also, are shelves swappable between F760s and F740s? Odd log entry

We're stumped, it appears as though someone issued a disk swap command on one of our filers, however none of us did. NetApp Release 5.1.2R3 on a 540. Is there some other reason that this might occur, disk or SCSI bus glitch? Vol status will tell you which one is the "root" (default boot) volume. To change it use vol options. Bakbone and Netapp

Hello , My company is providing security and storage solutions and we are a Netapp Reseller. Nowadays we are looking for a backup software to expand our storage solutions and I am examining Bakbone's Netvault .
