Hi Irene,
Please let me try and answer your question about sequential mode. The NetApp dump and restore utility has no way to control the robotics in a library. We do not have commands which tell the robot arm go to slot 3 and move the tape to drive 2, etc. Normally those types of commands are handled by the backup software packages. When a library is setup to respond to those types of commands, it is called "Random Access Mode". Most libraries by default are set that way. However, many, not all, libraries can also be set in "sequential or stacker mode". This means that the library simply moves from slot one to the next sequential slot. It can't "jump around", it just goes from the top to the bottom. Our dump utility will start at tape one, fill it up, eject the tape, insert next tape, fill it up, etc. When the library is set in sequential mode, we can control those basic functions. That is why it was suggested you set your library in that mode, however, I suggest you check with STK t!
o see if your library has that option. Hope this helps.

Subject: Help With Dump of a Filer 760
We currently own a Filer 760 running ONTAP 6.0.1.R3. Currently we are
backing up Unix files via nfs mounts. Soon we plan to put a lot of NT data
on the filer that needs to be backed up. Our agency backup software is
Legato 6.01 running on AIX 4.3.3. This version of Legato is non NDMP aware
so we cannot use it to backup the filer.
I am considering buying a StorageTek L20 (10 slots with 1 DLT7000 drive) and
attaching it directly to the filer via the onboard scsi adapter. I would
like to use dump and restore to carry out the backups so that I do not have
to buy another backup software solution. Netapp says this will work if I
can put the L20 in sequential mode. Does anyone know what this means? Is
anyone backing up a filer in this manner? If yes I would love to hear from
you. Also any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
