cifs and win nt res kit SU cmd

hi, i am just bringing up an f760 cluster with cifs and nfs. i had just configured my shares and went to edit some of the files in \etc with wordpad and found that i was getting access denied, but could edit them when going thru nfs and using vi. after checking a bunch of things it turned out that something wasn't happy about the way i was accessing the files - using the SU cmd in the nt 4 res kit. normally i log into my nt machine locally and if i want to do any domain admin stuff i just open a cmd window and SU to my domain admin acct. saves me from rebooting or using another machine. in this case i can SU and use srvmgr against the filer with no problem, but actually editing files that require administrator privileges doesn't work. i do have the correct mappings in usermap.cfg and editing does work properly if i do a "normal" domain admin login. any ideas? anybody ever get this to work? i really like being able to use SU this way and [in the past] it made it easy to test access against other ids without moving to another machine or rebooting? thanks. -- regards

NFS server timeouts on the clients

I have an brand new F720 running 5.3.6R2. We're exporting two qtrees via NFS and CIFS. When the system is almost completely quiet, I try to tar up about 2M of stuff and it takes FIVE minutes. I also see NFS timeout errors on all NFS clients (the one I'm doing the tar from is specifically solaris 8, but I see the timeouts on linux as well). I've tried NFS v2 and v3, both TCP and UDP, and nothing seems to help. netstat doesn't seem to show packet collisions (the netowrk ispretty much dead), not a lot of errors (<10%). I'm seeing writes about every 10 seconds (which should mean good performance), and the CPU is mostly idle. Why the hell does a tar of 2M take so bloody long? I can understand if I was moving a gig or so, but 2M?! I've included important info (this was after I had changed to v2 UDP). ESTALE

We're using HP machines running HP 11 against a NetApp, using NFS. We are occasionally seeing ESTALE errors on file I/O operations. This may be a problem in the application, but I'd welcome any information any of you have on just what ESTALE means. I've seen it described as occurring when an NFS client uses an invalid file handle, but I've also seen reference to it occurring when machines are rebooted. So, my rather vague question is: what do you all know about ESTALE? Just opening the tape again the next day reloads it if the same tape is still sitting in the drive. This is convenient at times without operator cover. Obviously I can change this to not unload the tape, but that has some disadvantages, including the greater exposure to loss of the filemark directory on a power failure that I mentioned before. I can live with it, though! Solaris' rmt implementation supports some larger-numbered "I" (ioctl) operations beyond 6, including 14 (MTLOAD). A nice solution for me would be to have ONTAP's rmt support this as well: an explicit load request doesn't fall into the overwrite-the-tape-by-accident scenario. However, I suppose that these extensions are highly unstandardised, and it might be asking rather a lot of NetApp to support them. Hi Brian and all. Snapmirror does xfer the source volume's snapshots over to the target volume, so that space has to be considered as well. In general you need as much or more space available on the snapmirror target. Solaris persistently trying to write to a snapshot

I wonder whether anyone else has seen the following effect? I made a casual reference to the problem back in May, but it's just jumped up and bit us rather hard. [Actually, it was before Christmas, but I didn't get round to writing it up then!] NFS server: F740 running ONTAP 5.3.7R1 NFS client: UltraSPARC (E220R) running Solaris 8 (well patched) [but the problem has been around since 5.3.5 & Solaris 2.6, at least: probably much longer] In some circumstances, the Solaris kernel can acquire the notion that it has pending NFS writes (apparently in the "buffer cache") to be performed on a file in a snapshot. When such a write is rejected by the filer with EROFS, Solaris logs the error... and tries it again after 30 seconds. And again. And again ... On one recent occurrence of this, as the result of a genuine user "error", the messages came so thick and fast that we had to reboot the client machine. The following, by contrast, was a controlled experiment! Test file: $ ls -li test/test 3715488 -rw-r--r-- 1 cet1 cet1 21167 Dec 23 15:50 test/test A snapshot was taken at 16:00. Q1. Why doesn't the open for writing of "test/.snapshot/hourly.0/test" fail? Is Solaris being confused by parts of a single NFS filing system being read-only, but not all of it? Or by the duplicate inode numbers of "test/test" (which would certainly have been cached) and "test/.snapshot/hourly.0/test"? Q2. Why does Solaris go on trying the write for so long? [And why keep on logging it so persistently? :-( ] I'll have to open a call with Sun about this in the new year, and would like to understand the problem better myself by then. You can use UDP or TCP and you can use Vers 2 or 3. You are going to find most of the performance affecting tuning is done via the NFS client options. Use smaller Rsize and Wsize (ie wsize=2048,rsize=2048) and try increasing your client UDP Buffer if you choose to use NFS over UDP. Also increase your NFS retries to between 3 and 5 and timeout to 10. Remember, over a possibly already fully WAN link... TCP does have slightly more overhead in total packet count transmitted ( provided UDP does not have too many retrans). Have fun with the tuning... and keep track of performance ( copy time ) with all Rsize and Wsize between 512 and 32k . Try small files and larger files. ndmpcoy maxes the CPU on 840

Whenever I fire an ndmpcopy from a 740 to 840, it immedietly maxes cpu (100%) on the 840. Only a reboot brings CPU activity down then.. Any clues....???? I would highly recommend going with 1 volume and 1 RAID group given your initial buy. With one shelf, you are going to get 1 parity and 6 data without leaving any disks as a spare - not a good idea. So, if use 1 disk for spare, then you have 5 data and 1 parity. Even with only one volume, you can easily setup NFS mount points and CIFS shares that either mix or do not by creating sub-directories or folders that reside on the 1 volume. Remember that you also give up space to NTAP, the O/S, and to snapshots which are volume specific (default is 20% of total volume size). That will leave you with about 4 drives of live file space. I don't like the idea of doing this all in one volume (especially /vol/vol0), but it looks as if this is the route I will be taking unless someone has a better recommendation. We have had excellent results with Filers and Extreme switches, specifically Black Diamonds, Summit 48s, 7is. We run several hundred gigs on each of our filers all as one volume. There's a downside in terms of restoring data in case of a failure, but since we paid a lot of money for these netapps in the first place so as to not *have* failures, we consider that an acceptable risk. Apologize for the delayed reply to this. Am a strong supporter of AIT-2 and Spectra Logic, but aren't you getting ahead of yourself? According to SL's web page, GbE interfaces are currently under development, but not yet available. If you want to implement GbE with Spectra Logic and NetApp today, you still require a backup server to which you would SCSI- or Fibre-attach your Spectra Logic tape library (I would recommend setting up a private network to take the traffic off your production network, though).
