Dell and Netapp are supposedly cooperating to divide the NAS market into pieces they each can exploit effectively. If Dell is just going to resell Netapp's at a cheaper price, what's the point? As to cheaper solutions than Netapp that allow you to add 1 disk at a time, no, I'm not aware of one. EMC claimed this could be done with RAID-5 but were unable to come clean with the full story. RAID-4 has many advantages and no other vendor can offer that because they don't have Netapp's technology. The fact the disks are more expensive shouldn't bother you; you get quality for the money. If you want to look at it another way, then just tell yourself the disks are exactly the same price you'd get elsewhere, and you're just paying a premium for the filer's unmatched performance and reliability. See http://now.netapp.com/knowledge/docs/olio/guides/53_troubleshooting/faq.sht… chor1395706 for a description of what default permissions get set for files created by CIFS clients. In summary, if the parent dir has NTFS-style security, the ACL inherits using normal NTFS inheritance rules. If the parent dir has UNIX-style security, the 2000 bit (SGID) and other perms inherit from the parent directory. It sounds like that may be the behavior you are looking for. Does anyone have this working with a Netapp? Is there a work around to allow MTS to use a network drive for com objects stored on a Netapp? Or any future compatability that the folks at Netapp could share? Any info would be appreciated Thanks, Jay

Mixing Shelves

I'm trying to figure out if the toasters always have just one volume, or if I can have a few shelves as 4 gig, and a few as 9 gig, and use 2 mount points (one for the 9G and one for the 4G shelves). We've currently got 4 shelves of 4gig narrows, but all that is available from NetApps now (and soon to be stopped) are fast/wide 9gig shelves/controllers. Can we take a fast/wide card and a shelf of 9GIG to expand, or will the 9G drives be treated like 4G drives, and I'll loose the extra 5G per drive? ----------- Fujitsu - Nexion, St. Louis, MO Jay Orr (314) 579-6517

I'm in the market for something very similar to a F720 but with cheaper 18GB drive prices. I know of competitive products from Nitech and Procomm but as far as I can tell nothing but the NetApp will let me add 1 or 2 drives to the RAID set at a time.
