Dear all, It is the end of September and the end of James. “Already?!” I hear you cry! Although the weather this week has definitely shown us the year is drawing to its close and the autumn of the year is upon us. So, it seems appropriate that we are talking about endings in James this week – not just endings of the book but looking ahead to the ending of days. Some may find this a depressing thought, but personally I see it as merely a recognition that all things have their times and their seasons and much as we like to think we are in control of life -there are some things out of our control. We may make all the plans in the world but find them turned on their head tomorrow or we might wish with all our might for something to happen today but in fact need to be patient and wait. As I see it there are two responses to the lack of control in life: We could think “nothing matters, it’s all meaningless, what’s the point of working at anything in this life if we can’t control what happens and when?” Or we could recognise that “we are not in control, no, but we believe in a good and generous God, therefore today is a gift that was unearned and unsought, how can I best honour and value that gift?” The book of James, with his focus on wise living in response to faith in God, is all about that latter response. Recognising God’s sovereignty, God’s grace, God’s gift. Being transformed by it and living in response to it each and every day. And life may involve suffering and bad times as the reality of our broken world impacts on our lives but *“be patient…brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming…Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you ill? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.”* Live your daily lives, James is saying. Grieve, celebrate as and when you need – serve each other with faith in Jesus. This is how we as a community can stand apart and show another way – The Way of Jesus – that has its foundation and strength in the love of God that shows us how to live in community and communion with each other. And this Way stands apart from the world that has as its foundation a reliance on money and status. And James ends reminding us of the power of prayer as we live – and wait – prayers are not just words thrown out into the ether they are a point of connection with the Almighty – the source of all power in the world. And when we make that connection in all the humble recognition of who we are in the light of God’s power God can work through us and change the world. *“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16* And so I pray in confidence for you this week that you will be drawn closer to God and know God’s power in your life and in the life of our community. *News and Upcoming Events* *Thank You! *To all who supported our Macmillan coffee morning (this afternoon) we raised a wonderful £96.10 – a special thank you to Peter Andrews who championed the whole event. *Saturday 28th September – 10.30-4pm Harvest Workshop at St Martin's Church* A day of workshops & worship for people with learning disabilities, their families or support staff. *Sunday 29th September – Harvest Festival at St Philip’s Church - 10.30am – *Please do consider bringing food products to the service to donate to The Edge Café Food Hub and Community Fridge *Saturday 5th October – 10am-1pm – Quiet Morning at St John’s Church, Hills Road *Organised by members of the Cambridge Month of Accompanied Prayer Team this will be a time to listen to God and be in God’s presence. Dear all, As we continue our journey through James we reach his words on wisdom and before we even begin to explore what Godly wisdom is in this chapter – and how we seek Godly wisdom we need to establish what wisdom is. Because I think we frequently make the mistake of confusing or indeed conflating wisdom and knowledge. Knowledge is that brain expanding, fact building, information gathering activity which – let’s be honest - in our city of Cambridge is a highly prized attribute! But wisdom is more than knowledge, indeed it isn’t necessarily reliant on knowledge, it grows out of experience, observation, empathy, perspective amongst others, it is an understanding that is richer than simply knowing. My favourite example to show this distinction is that wonderful phrase “Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad...” Now this distinction may not seem to be very profound but it is actually important to be reminded I think. Especially living in the city in which we live. We are all surrounded by incredibly knowledgeable people and, whether we are conscious of it or not, there is tendency to defer to those who have proven their extensive knowledge by collecting letters after their name. But we can be guilty of it in church circles too – one of the disadvantages of know Jesus to be the living *Word* and having scripture so easily available for us all to read is that we are at the risk of beginning to value knowledge of God’s word and knowledge of the Bible over Godly wisdom in the faith. Knowledge of scripture is great – don’t misunderstand me - but we need to be careful that the knowledge we gather is feeding the wisdom we are called to seek. Wisdom which is reached by opening ourselves to God’s heart, acknowledging that God’s way might be better than our way, allowing ourselves time with God’s Spirit so that we can be moved, changed, inspired and instructed. Jesus of course came, as a man, to show us humans how to do this work so that we can - as James exhorts us to do: *“Draw near to God”* and know that *“he will draw near to you” James 4:8* I wonder who are the wise people of faith you could seek to spend time with and learn from? How do they draw near to God which might help you to draw near to God too? *News and Upcoming Events* *Saturday 21st September – 9.30am till after lunch – Walk from Waterbeach Station to Ely *The Men's Group are planning this social walk to Ely Cathedral, arriving in Ely for lunch and a visit to the cathedral. Dear all, Were you brought up on the phrase “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”? I was. And I felt no end of pain as many unkind, aggressive or simply thoughtless words continued to hurt me long after I’d recovered from any physical injury! It just isn’t true. Words hurt. They have power. We are moving into chapter 3 of our study of James and we come to James’ wonderful study on the power of the tongue. This little collection of muscles which have the power to build up and to tear down – more power than and bodybuilder or super heavy weight lifter can ever generate. The power of words can change the world. “I have a dream…” “we shall fight on the beaches…” Words that galvanised entire nations and peoples - encouraging, exhorting, inspiring! But as James points out: *Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?* *James 3:10-11* And yet from the human mouth – yes we can spew forth both life giving words and life snatching words. As we have journeyed with James’ teaching thus far we have taken some long hard looks at ourselves, out behaviour, our actions and now we come to looking at our speech. How often have we been guilty of saying words in the heat of the moment, or without full understanding, which are unkind, which are negative, which wound the person hearing them. The easiest test is to imagine those words being spoken back to you – would you be affirmed to hear them? So often the answer is no. Well then, we shouldn’t say them. If we claim to be followers of Jesus and followers of the greatest commandments to love God and to love our neighbour then the words we speak should be words of affirmation. And yes sometimes we have to say difficult things and we may need to challenge others, but always from a place of love so that we can move forward positively with each other – even in conflict. So this week I invite you to notice your words. To notice how you say those words. To notice what habits you may have fallen into with your language. May God’s *living word* inspire you afresh this week as we all attempt to tame our tongues! *News and Upcoming Events* *Wednesday 18th September Prayer Meeting, 7.30pm at church *The first monthly in person prayer meeting led by Polly Macartney. Dear all, *“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if people claim to have faith but have no deeds? * *Can such faith save them?” James 2:14* This Sunday we move to James chapter 2 and we delve into that world of faith vs works – well actually we don’t! Historically, this is how the argument has been set up, but it is not actually what James’ words mean in context. The majority of chapter 2 of James is all about not showing favouritism. It expands on and explores what it looks like, practically and in a church context, to “love your neighbour”. And James, with his use of the word “works” or “deeds” is actually telling the early church that their *actions* expose whether they are actually following God’s laws regardless of whatc their *professions of faith* might imply. Showing favouritism – in this context for the rich over the poor as they enter the congregation – is not loving one’s neighbour as yourself. It is only loving a certain type of neighbour. Jesus’ whole parable about the Good Samaritan challenged this human tendency to judge/exclude/prefer and revealed that God’s way was different. God’s way is a way that moves beyond what divides us – be that race or money or status, political opinion, gender, sexuality, education, age, language, musical taste or favourite animal! Human beings instinctively categorize each other as we strive to find where we “fit” and as we search for community with “people like us” and thus we ironically cause division. What is so disruptive and shocking, and frankly wonderful, about God’s way is that it is fundamentally against such division. We talk about Jesus breaking down barriers and undermining societal norms but what he simply did was treat every person as an individual known and loved by God. This is the gospel we follow and should be proclaiming to all the world – the “good news” of Jesus. And if we each actually acted in this way – by golly – what a different world we would be living in, it would be paradise. Wait. It really would be paradise. It would be God’s kingdom – heaven – paradise – whatever word you want to use. But it would be the way God means for us to live and flourish as humanity. Now of course the challenge is that humanly speaking it can be *really* hard to treat everyone equally and with love. But, we are not doing it “humanly” – God’s Spirit (the very one that creates unity within the Godhead three-in-one) lives in us too. It is through God’s strength, God’s love and God’s compassion that we can begin to live out this faith that we have. And yes, we don’t get it right all the time, and yes we get tired and grumpy, hungry and hangry and might often say the wrong thing but we need to keep coming back to God and saying “Sorry. I need help again!
