Dear all, *“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!”* The last psalm in the biblical collection is a wonderful call to worship God in all sorts of ways – in sacred spaces and under the stars, with instruments and with our bodies in dance. It is a fitting end to a book which sets out to teach us how to praise God and pray to God – to end with this exhortation which in essence draws all the teaching to a close with the implication “We have heard all about God, we’ve acknowledged all the challenges of life and the way God meets us within them. We’ve listed all the reasons to praise God so – just do it – anywhere, everywhere in every way imaginable!” But for me it is that key phrase “everything that has breath” that speaks most powerfully. Worship of God is not limited to humanity. It was something St Francis of Assisi was famous for acknowledging - calling all creatures his “brothers” and “sisters” and preaching to the birds. In one story about his life, he apparently persuaded a wild wolf to stop attacking and terrorising the people of a town if they would promise to feed “brother wolf”. St Francis recognised that all creation is connected to God and capable of worshiping God and as such is in some way - family. This connection with the rest of creation is something environmentalists have been urging us to remember and return to for decades. As technology provides us with more and more independence from the natural world we have become more and more careless about our innate interconnectedness and that disregard comes at worrying cost to God’s creation. As we enter into the summer holidays and the weather (hopefully!) allows us more and more time outdoors I invite you to notice all those things that have breath – indeed all those things that are alive – how would it feel to consider them a brother or sister? How would you treat them differently? The end is in sight however and we hope they will all be back in use soon. *Opportunities* *Church Set Up on a Sunday *St Philip’s has always employed an individual to set out our chairs on a Sunday morning but for various reasons we would like to be able to do this task within our own congregation. If you would be willing to occasionally come at 9.45pm on a Sunday morning to put out chairs please get in touch. Creating several teams of 2 or 3 would ensure this job is not an onerous one for any single individual. *Eco-Bite – our new green “nugget” each week: * We all know that our food choices have an impact on our delicately balanced climate. But it can be difficult to know or fully comprehend exactly how. Please pray for the committee as they frustratingly have to begin again and also for Bishop Dagmar as she continues to hold episcopal oversight for Ely on her own. *Lucy Sixsmith *It is Lucy’s last Sunday this week. Dear all, *“Let the words of my mouth* *and the meditation of my heart* *be acceptable to you,* *O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14* We are drawing to the end of our Psalm Sermon series and we come to Psalm 19 a beautiful psalm glorifying God in the created world and in scripture. Proclaiming the power of God to speak silently in the beauty of the universe and to speak actively in the written word – the law (and personified in Jesus!). These two dynamics display that God is both hidden and visible. Visible in that the evidence is physically present in the world. Hidden in that it requires observation, notice and understanding on our part to enable us to listen and hear and see what God is saying. But importantly God is constant, faithful, upright and loving in both spheres. Both creation and the law declare God to be good! Hidden or visible there is integrity within the character of God. Human beings – not so much. We have an ability to create a silent internal life we can try to hide from the world and an external, visible life we project out into the world. How often are you relieved that no one knows what goes on in your head – or ashamed of someone’s praise because you think “If only they knew…” We are often in conflict between our inner and outer worlds. Yet as creatures made in God’s image I would suggest that this coherence between what is hidden and what is visible is what we should be striving for. That *every* aspect of our lives is honourable. It is what this prayer that concludes Psalm 19 is asking – that both the psalmist’s internal world and external world are acceptable to God. That both dimensions of who we are – are consistent with each other and right before God. Jesus, as God incarnate, models how this looks in a fallible human being and it is charismatic! It makes Jesus stand out, it draws people to him. There is a glimpse of a whole new way of living in the way Jesus lives. And as followers we are exhorted to shape our lives around Jesus – live like Jesus, act like Jesus would act, love like Jesus would love. But if you have ever struggled and wondered how on earth to do that – this simple verse from Psalm 19 offers a good place to start. You might like to use it as a prayer to begin each day. “May the words I speak today, And the thoughts I think today Be Godly and loving. Dear all, *“As a deer longs for flowing streams,* *so my soul longs for you, O God.” Psalm 42:1* Have you ever longed for God? Not longed for God to act or longed for God to answer prayer or longed for God to guide you - but just longed for God? For God’s presence, for the refreshment, renewal and life-giving power of God’s existence? Our Psalm Sermon Series moves on to look at this longing this week as we encounter Psalm 42. It is a psalm written from a place of distance from God, a place of isolation, loneliness and hardship yet it doesn’t ask for God to change the circumstances for the psalmist it just calls out again and again for God’s presence. For the distance to be removed, for God’s companionship to be felt, once again. I wonder how often we yearn for God? How often our prayers are centred around simply wanting to spend time with God? Or are we more focussed on the asking? The intercessions? The petitions? The discipline and practice of creating space in our lives for simply being with God – not with an agenda – not even with a purpose (albeit that making the space is in itself purposeful) – but recognising the importance of developing a thirst for God – is a challenging one, but crucial. Those of you who regularly exercise for the benefit of your physical bodies would no doubt say that the more we exercise the more we miss exercise when we cannot do it for some reason. Exercise breeds a desire for exercise. Making time to be with God breeds a desire for more time to simply *be* with God. The silent sitting time is not for everyone – our personality types influence how we engage with our faith. It might be that for you that sitting in a comfy chair in silent contemplation is the most refreshing or it might be time listening to worship music, or walking in the countryside is more helpful. But it needs to be time invested. When we are wholly focussed on making it *God time.* Not slipping it in whilst we do another activity or while our mind is somewhere else, but time set aside to come into God’s presence for no other purpose than to simply *be* with God. Because I invite you to ponder on the name of God in Exodus 3:14 “I am who I am”. God said to Moses in that encounter “…say to the Israelites: “I AM has sent me to you””. God is the verb to be. God is life, the source of life and God’s name is TO BE. For many of us with busy lives and many calls on our time our longing is often for rest and a chance to step off the treadmill. Well, I would argue, that this longing for rest is in fact a longing to simply be – without the need to *do – *and the longing to simply *be* is a longing for the source of simply *being*. The great I AM. I pray that this week you find some time to *be* with God and that it awakes in you a thirst for more of that time and more of God. *News and Upcoming Events* **Saturday 13th July* - 10am - Safeguarding Training *If you are planning on attending please let Ruth know so that the morning can be tailored to training needs. Please note that if you have a named volunteer role at St Philip’s Church Safeguarding Training in mandatory, so if you are struggling to make time to do the training on your own this is a perfect opportunity! *Saturday 13th July – St Philip’s Families Ice-Cream Party *Those of you who have young children at St Philip’s I hope will have received your invitations to the Vicarage to gorge on ice-cream. Opportunity to see St Philip's School production

Dear all, I've just heard from school that they would love to open up the invitation to watch the Yr 5/6 Production of Aladdin on Thursday afternoon to the local residents. (Usually these are just for parents) It is short notice but if you would like to watch please call the school office to book a free ticket. It would be wonderful to support the children who have worked so hard on this (including some of our own St Ps Church Explorers) and to build more links between church and school in this way. *Year 5 & 6 Production of Aladdin* *Venue:* St Philip’s CofE Primary School (Vinery Way, Cambridge CB1 3DR) Enter through the front entrance. Dear all, Do you ever get angry? Where do you take that anger? How do you manage it? Over the course of yesterday and last night, I think we witnessed a large percentage of the voting public in the UK expressing their anger at the (former) government in a decisive rejection of the Conservative party. It felt like the silent democratic expression of years of built-up anger and frustration as the results map of the country slowly turned red overnight! But that was anger with a focus of perceived blame where there was something proactive people could do with their anger. Where do we take anger at events for which there is no conceivable explanation or no apparent individual or institution to blame and nothing we can do? This week *Mark Rodel* is coming to continue our Psalm Sermon Series and will be looking at Psalm 44. A Psalm that ends in anger, anger that is turned to God. The psalmist can see no reason for all the terrible things they are suffering – yet they know from their past or from what they have been taught of their nation’s past – that God is sovereign. God has control over all things. God can work miracles. So if they are suffering now, through no fault of their own or anyone else, then God - who could act but seemingly hasn’t - is the focus of their rage: *“Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep?* *Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.”* *Psalm 44:23* How do you feel about being angry at God? About using language that implies our Lord is a lazy, good for nothing who can’t be bothered to get out of bed and do anything helpful? It is quite shocking! But what an amazing expression of faith that the psalmist even believes that God is worth getting angry at. Only faith that God is *there* and *listening* can bring forth such raw and honest expressions of wrath. And engender an engagement with God even in the depths of their suffering. And I believe this is what true faith looks like. I don’t believe that true faith is the relentlessly serene, so holy they are hard to talk to, image of a Christian that a lot of us mistakenly hold to (even if it is unconsciously done). True faith is the belief that God is there no matter what and that God is worth getting angry with so that we can try to understand life better! Any relationship is only as deep as the deepest emotion shared. If we only take our mild-mannered selves to God then we will only ever have a mild relationship. But if we want a relationship with God that reaches to our very core then we need to go deeper and let God in. And sometimes that is going to involve us getting spitting mad at the stuff that goes on in this world and that God seems to allow. *News and Upcoming Events* **Saturday 13th July* - morning *Ruth will be running Safeguarding training covering (at least) Basic and Foundation modules. If you know that your training needs a refresher and you struggle to do the online courses on your own then this is the opportunity to fulfil those training obligations. All those on PCC and working with our children and vulnerable adults *must* complete these courses but they are actually very helpful for all of us to understand our group responsibility to maintain church as a safe place for all. Let Ruth know if you would like to join her and we will confirm timings with you. *Sunday 14th July - St Philip’s will be providing a welcome tea for the first Cambridge International Summer Outreach team* If you are able to help by providing a little something towards the tea your generosity would be greatly appreciated! Perhaps some sausage rolls or finger sandwiches, a punnet of cherry tomatoes, a bag of crisps or some cupcakes or fruit for example. Please pray for wisdom for all involved in choosing who our next Bishop will be. *General Synod *this is the top level of governance in the Church of England, made up of elected members of laity, clergy and bishops. Please pray for them as they meet *5th-9th July* and make all sorts of important decisions about the direction of the Church of England. *The family of Cynthia Constable who sadly died last week. *Please continue to pray for Cynthia’s family especially as they prepare for her funeral which will be at Cambridge City Crematorium on Tuesday 16th July at 12 noon. *Lucy Sixsmith *will be stepping down from her role as Parish Assistant at the end of July. We will be so sad to see her leave St Philip’s but please pray for her in this next season of life and please also pray for us as a church as we seek to reappoint someone to the role.
