We have seen this same thing with QLogic cards from EMC and SUN.  There is an PCI-bus identification number on the card that is changed for the same cards from different vendors.  We confirmed this when trying to get a Sun-branded QLogic 23xx working with the QLogic drivers (not the Sun distributed ones).  You can override this in Solaris, but the incantations are a closely guarded secret (at least from QLogic).  This number does not seem to be set by the firmware that you download into the card.

Subject: RE: FC TapeSAN compatibility

Hi, Derek --

I can't tell you about compatibility.  I can tell you to watch out for those "oem version" chips.  In my recent struggles to understand why our Dell servers can't see LUNs offered by our NetApp, one of the HBAs with which I experimented was listed as a "QLA2322".  Since the first thing you do when confronted with situations like this is to make sure everything in the path has the correct (usually latest) firmware, I tried to locate information about this chip from Qlogic's web site, but failed.  When I called them to ask about this, they initially didn't believe I had the correct part number, and asked me to extract the card from the box, to get the part number from the ASIC.  After confirming this, I was placed on hold for about ten minutes, and then told that this is indeed an OEM chip, and is the reason why my attempts to use the QLA2300 firmware fails.  The firmware version number in use on the chip is vastly different than that of the 2300, so it isn't easy to figure out if the firmware is close to what the 2300s know how to do, and it isn't clear at all how one updates the firmware.

We're buying straight 2340s. The 2322 will be returned to Dell with the eval system they let us try.

  Good luck!

Don

Subject: FC TapeSAN compatibility

Anyone know if X2051A is compatible with a Brocade Silkworm 3250? I saw some email about problems on this alias with a X2051A and 3200.

I checked NOW and there is a Brocade switch configuration for TapeSAN backup solution, http://www.netapp.com/osn/info/fc/brocade.html that seems to indicate that it should be compatible. However, it does not mention X2051A specifically. I went to Brocade's web site and it does not mention Qlogic 2312. This part number also is not mentioned on Qlogic's web site. In fact, I can't find that part number on Brocade's web site at all! Why is that? Is it the same as qla2300, just an oem version?
