To add to what he said, you probably do not want to run SQL over CIFS unless you are using SMB 3.0 (Windows 2012)

Hello Toasters,

We have a new NetApp and are going to migrate our SQL Servers onto it.

For many reasons, I would like to avoid LUN provisioning and would prefer NFS or CIFS.

Can I get feedback on which works better in practice?
Any hypervisor in operation?

If not then CIFS is your obvious choice as NFS, while capable for many things, won't have the same integration with SQL Server as CIFS would.

If hypervisor, and hypervisor is VMware, then NFS to store your VMDKs on.

If it is Hyper-V then CIFS.

best of luck!
