Hi Alexander,

You remember correctly, here's what should happen:

Type

PSUs

Expected Behavior

SAS

4

Normal operation. All disks will spin up at the same time.

3

Staggered disk spin-up. Six drives per column (four columns) will spin up at a time with 12-second intervals between each column.

2

Staggered disk spin-up as above.

1

The shelf will still function but with several issues. Any drives that are currently powered up when reduced to one PSU will continue to function. From a cold boot, some drives (undetermined) will not spin up due to a lack of power once a certain number of drives have spun up. This is an unsupported operating condition.

SATA

4

Normal operation. All disks will spin up at the same time.

3

Staggered disk spin-up. Six drives per column (four columns) will spin up at a time with 12-second intervals between each column.

2

Staggered disk spin-up as above.

1

Staggered disk spin-up with one difference. The first three columns, six disks each, will spin up with the normal 12-second interval. The fourth column will spin up five of six disk drives with the sixth drive (bay 23) spinning up 12 seconds later.

Nevertheless I'd also expect an AutoSupport, since you *do* want a replacement PSU if one actually breaks.
You might think about sending NetApp a
options autosupport.doit "We're going to do some shelf maintenance"
...  ;-)

Greetings from up North (Nordfriesland)

Sebastian

Hey there,

we were just re-cabling some of the power cords on our DS4243 shelfs with 4 PSUs and 24x 15k 600GB SAS.

When I power down one of the 4 available PSUs in the DS4243, I get the following messages in system log and autosupports are generated:

Wed Feb  6 19:29:11 CET [barricade:monitor.shelf.fault.ok:info]: Fault previously reported on disk storage shelf attached to channel 0a has been corrected.

Wed Feb  6 19:29:11 CET [barricade:monitor.shelf.configError.ok:info]: Enclosure services-detected configuration error has been corrected on channel 0a.

Wed Feb  6 19:30:00 CET [barricade:monitor.globalStatus.ok:info]: The system's global status is normal.

Why exactly does it think that there are not enough power supplies present if I just shut down one of them? I was under the assumption that a full SAS shelf can work with 2 PSUs and a full SATA shelf can work with 1 PSU without problems. Am I wrong?

Nothing happend to the filers, no takeover, no errors, etc., but the message in the logs puzzles me.

Thanks && bye,
