md5sum is a checksum program (it aims to check the integrity of a file by computing a hash code based on the size and binary content of the file - most common cheksum under un*x is cksum -the simplest is sum)
I guess u have a md5sum type program which generates those directory but can't tell you why and how (u r under windoze ?)

I keep getting these folders on one of my CIFS volumes. I don't think the Filer is responsible but I'm having trouble finding the cause. Below is an example of a folder name. There is sometimes a symbols folder underneath the main folder but not in every case. There are no files under the folder at all.
