In answer to Todd's question:

We use RCS as a backend to Sniff, on both UNIX & PC. The issue was correctl spotted by Mark. We have found that the bug mentioned did in fact cause our problems (prehaps Mark implemented the fix?) So if you are using source control, watch out!

Cheers Mark et al for your advice and help with tis, it was kind of a major problem for us.

        What RCS package are you using on the pc's?  To what security
mode is the filer set?

        Though a long-shot, does the output of `cifs sessions *` show
any locks on files?
