I wrote a blog showing end-to-end native NAS auditing setup for both CIFS and NFS at https://storageexorcist.wordpress.com/2020/06/03/ontap-native-nas-auditing-smb-and-nfs. NetAppDocs does a great job showing the ONTAP side, but this is a reference with docs help showing the entire setup including the client SACL to make auditing work.

The term auditing can mean different things. Are you looking for something that will keep a database of actions done by users to files?
