It can be pretty signifigant, it's not as well documented as VMDK misalignment but I'd expect similar numbers.
 
 It looks like the Solaris configuration shouldn't be an issue, it's got a larger offset but still aligned the same way as an AIX LUN.

Jeremy,

The LUN type setup up characteristics for that LUN like On-Disk Layout, while this may be working for you, you might not have optimal performance.

Once it is created, I don’t think you can change the LUN type, you would have to create a new one (same size) with the correct LUN type and copy over the data.
