No, when I say a "DOS partition table" I mean what I get by running the program "/sbin/fdisk" under Linux, and subsequently doing e.g.
mke2fs -L APPDATA -j /dev/sde1
instead of just doing
mke2fs -L APPDAT -j /dev/sde
