Just be sure to document your cabling carefully, so someone how comes after you down the road, including yourself, to add another shelf will know that your latest DS2246 in your stack is really next-to-the-last  in cabling terms.  Don’t expect cabling to look pretty after you insert your shelf into the middle of the stack.

I’ve recently had ACP housekeeping complain about missing IOMs, even though cabling was all correct after the shelf addition.  If disabling and reenabling ACP and cable pull/inserts don’t clear it, you might have to actually pull the IOM and reseat it.  All non-disruptive operations as long as you start out from Multipath HA state.

Yes, you can absolutely hot-add the new DS2246 into your disk stack to get to the configuration you want.  The only thing to be careful is to maintain at least a single path at all times.  If you want details, I can send you the decabling and recabling sequence for your stack.
