SnapDiff is an incremental forever backup without NDMP.  To do SnapDiff, you need to have what I’ll call a proxy defined across the NetApp vfiler volumes.  This can be a VM – what this TSM client does is use http to send the snapshot request to the filer and then compare it to the prior snapshot and then the changes are sent to the TSM client API running the –snapdiff command.  I have placed a picture of what this looks like.  This client that must be at 6.4.  When installing the client to this “proxy”, make sure you load the NetApp library to support the access to the vfilers through http and use the set password to authorize the “proxy” talking to the filer.  NDMP is not used when SnapDiff is used.  This change will do a full for the first backup to establish the original snapshot.  Think of this a lot like Journaling and it helps to understand.  I think it’s easiest to setup with a Windows proxy but you can use anything that has access to the vfiler volumes.  Below are some screen shots and the manual section for this is at http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/tsminfo/v6r4/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.itsm.client.doc%2Fr_opt_snapdiff.html .

Andrew,

Have you contacted an IBM TSM?

FWIW, we back up our netapp gear via NDMP using CommVault. We also use TSM to back up a large amount of POSIX/NFS data but do so via NFS. We've attempted to set up NDMP on TSM with no luck, instead our solution has been to mount the volume via NFS to a backup proxy.

If anyone is using TSM and NDMP I'd love to hear about it (and how you're doing it).

Hi

Is anyone using Tivoli Storage Manager to backup a netapp. We’ve been struggling to get this working for some time now and would welcome advice from anyone who’s got it working

Andrew
