Have you considered using something like Kazeon (<a href="http://www.kazeon.com">www.kazeon.com</a>) or
google search appliance ? These appliances can crawl your filers and
index file attributes (and content) and are security aware. You could
also use them for ILM type applications...<br>

One of the engineers has asked I just do a cron job every night of a
complete file listing into a file... but I think this is something that
might not even run overnight, we've got so many files.<br>
